I am running for the Anchorage School Board to advocate for a return to merit-based policies in our educational system. The recent executive orders by President Trump to end practices that prioritize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) over individual merit resonate with my belief that every student should be judged and rewarded based on their hard work, talent, and academic achievements.
In our schools, we've seen a shift away from focusing on what truly matters—education quality, student performance, and preparation for the future. We must ensure that our educational system does not compromise on excellence or fairness. By supporting these changes and committing to enforce policy that reflects these values, we can:
- Realign our focus on academic excellence, ensuring that every student has access to a curriculum that challenges them and prepares them for success in college or their chosen career path.
- Promote a culture of achievement where students are encouraged to strive for personal bests, recognizing that true equity comes from providing equal opportunities to excel, not from lowering standards.
- Ensure hiring and admissions are based on merit, removing any practices that could be seen as discriminatory or preferential based on factors other than competence and potential. This means hiring the best teachers, administrators, and support staff who will serve our students with the highest levels of professionalism and dedication.
- Support policies that are transparent and fair, giving all students, regardless of background, the same chance to succeed. It's about fostering an environment where diversity is naturally achieved through merit and where every student can feel proud of their accomplishments.
- Engage with our community to educate about the importance of merit-based systems, ensuring that parents, students, and educators understand that our goal is to create an inclusive environment that values hard work and talent above all else.
I believe in an educational system that celebrates diversity through achievement, not through mandates or quotas. My commitment is to uphold and enforce these policies in Anchorage, ensuring that our schools become beacons of excellence, where every student's potential is recognized and nurtured. Let's return to a system where merit, hard work, and dedication are the true paths to success.
